Open Championship First Round Leader Odds
Dustin Johnson is the 22/1 favourite to be sitting on top of the leaderboard at the end of Thursday’s play and the world number one has led after the opening round in two of his past four starts worldwide. Can the American hit the ground running this week?
Rory McIlroy has previous when it comes to the Thursday of The Open as he has been in the top-five of the leaderboard after the first round on three occasions in his nine appearances at this tournament, including holding the outright lead on two occasions. McIlroy boasts a first round scoring average of 69.22 at The Open and he is 25/1 to be first round leader.
Reigning champion Jordan Spieth’s first round average in the third major of the year is an impressive 68.60 and he is 33/1 after being first round leader in two of his last eight starts worldwide.
Open Championship First Round Leader Betting Tips
Justin Rose is a player who has proven to be profitable for us in the past and the Englishman is a tempting 28/1 with Betfred (paying each-way terms on six places). Rose ranks ninth on the PGA Tour for first round scoring average (69.27) this year and that is enhanced to seventh when only considering his early rounds – Rose tees off at 9.58am on Thursday.
Zach Johnson has been inside the top-five of the leaderboard after the first round on four occasions in the past 14 editions of The Open Championship and the 2015 champions is worthy of consideration at 70/1 with Betfred. The American led after the first round of the Travelers recently and he currently ranks tied 20th on the PGA Tour for first round scoring average (69.65).
Finally, our long shot for the first round leader bracket is the veteran Retief Goosen, who finished tied 10th at Carnoustie in 1999 and tied 23rd in 2007, The South African has an excellent record at The Open as he has missed just one cut in 16 appearances, including 12 top-25 finishes, with eight of those top-tens.
Goosen may be getting on in years but the two-time US Open winner has shown that he can compete this year. He has secured four top-20 finishes around the world this season, including a tie for 6th at the St Jude Classic recently, and he should enjoy playing alongside fellow golden oldies Darren Clarke and Bernhard Langer on Thursday. Goosen is a massive 200/1 to be first round leader with Betfred.
