The best week of the summer is finally here with the first day of Royal Ascot getting underway on Tuesday and we are set for five days of the very best sport anywhere in the world. Day one is always a cracking start with three Group 1 races on the agenda to enjoy and it is time for a week of top hats and betting at the world famous Berkshire track.
Queen Anne Stakes
As is traditional, the Queen Anne Stakes will be the first race of the week and the first Group 1 of the day as the best older horses do battle over the famous straight mile at Ascot. Far from a stellar renewal this year, we do however have a competitive race with Le Brivido, Mustashry and Barney Roy all available at around 5/1
Barney Roy who can be backed at 6/1 with Bet Victor might well be the best bet in a remarkably wide open contest but this could well be a winning start for the bookmakers on day one of a busy week of punting.
King’s Stand Stakes
The second Group 1 of the day at the Royal meeting is the King’s Stand Stakes and few races can match this one for excitement and drama. The fastest equine stars on the plant clash over the flying five furlongs in Berkshire an this year we have an epic duel on our hands.
Battaash (2/1), who can be brilliant but inconsistent, takes on Blue Point (3/1) who has won his lat three races and it would be surprise if the winner came from outside of those two scorching stars of the turf.
St James’s Palace Stakes
The third and final Group 1 of the day is the hugely prestigious St James’s Park Stakes with the classic generation getting their chance over one mile on the round course.
Previous winners of this race include Canford Cliffs and Frankel to name just two legends of the sport and we once again have an excellent line-up to saviour. Phoenix Of Spain and Too Darn Hot finished in the first two in the Irish 2000 guineas last time out with the former coming out on top and they are the top two in the ante-post market.
King Of Comedy (6/1) and Skardu (11/1) add some depth to the field but on balance it looks as though Phoenix Of Spain is the one going in the right direction and open to bundles of improvement. The charlie Hills trained star is the one to beat in the betting at 7/4 with Bet Victor.com.
Sit back, get the tele on and enjoy one of the finest days of sport of the year!
