Tunisia v England Odds
England will see Tunisia as an ideal opener to their World Cup campaign, but Southgate will not want the Three Lions to start off slowly like they did at the 2014 World Cup, and will want his players to kick off the tournament with a win, and the bookmakers fully expect England to bag three points as they are 4/9 shots with Ladbrokes to win the match.
Tunisia qualified for the World Cup in top spot in their qualifying stages, but they have struggled when it comes to progressing into the latter stages of the World Cup, as in their previous four tournaments they have failed to get out of the group once, so it’s hard to see them being able to tame both England or Belgium, and the 8/1 with Paddy Power for a Tunisia win here is a little short, while the draw is available at 7/2 with Betfair.
England and Tunisia last locked horns at the 1998 World Cup in France, with the Three Lions prevailaing 1-0, and while Southgate is sweating on the fitness of Marcus Rashford, who blossomed in their friendly win over Costa Rica, there are no other major injury concerns for him and with Harry Kane likely to launch out of the traps and try and give England a half-time lead, it should prove to be a fairly comfortable win for the match favourites.
Little is expected of Southgate’s side in Russia, and this could be an ideal opportunity for the England players to play with freedom, and with the likes of Dele Alli and Raheem Sterling likely to be given the shirt to start the game then that duo could feed captain Kane with some decent service, and the Spurs star can torment the Tunisian back-line, who were last seen being beaten 1-0 by Spain in a friendly.
Tunisia v England First Goalscorer Odds
While England ooze flare in the attacking third, it’s the defensive line that will come under scrutiny in Russia, with Kyle Walker, John Stones and Harry Maguire set to make up the defending triumvirate, but they should have little to do against a Tunisian side that will struggle to get on the ball on Monday night, and the 11/10 with BetVictor for England to win to nil should oblige.
If Southgate’s men can settle into the match then they should be able to strike early, and it’s hard to look away from Harry Kane scoring first, even if it is a little short at 11/5 with Ladbrokes, while value punters may look towards the 4/1 with Betfred for Sterling to score first.
Unlike previous England sides that sit back when in front, Southgate appears to have a different stance with this current crop, and if they can bag the opening goal early then the former England international will push his players to double their lead, and with only one defensive midfielder set to play – likely to be Jordan Henderson – then England can grab at least two goals and maybe a third late on.
With that in mind, the 21/20 with Ladbrokes for England to be leading at half-time and full-time can provide the best bet of a match that can kick off England’s quest for World Cup glory for the first time in 52 years in fine style.
