Saturday 15th July, 2017 – 3:25pm Newmarket – Bunbury Cup
A maximum field of 20 runners will head to the 7f start at Newmarket for the 2017 Bunbury Cup, and unsurprisingly it’s a real betting minefield for punters at Flat HQ, with Tashweeq and Flaming Spear battling it out for favouritism in what should be a superb renewal, which is one of the premier races on the undercard on July Cup day.
- The last nine winners have carried 9st or more
- Richard Fahey has trained two of the last three winners (saddles Withernsea)
- Gossiping has won four of last five races for Gary Moore

John Gosden’s Tashweeq suffered some injury problems in the early part of his career, but he shaped with real promise last time out when finishing third in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot, and if he can build on that effort here then he deserves to be heading the betting at 6/1 with Betfred for this race.
However, it’s the Kevin Ryan-trained Flaming Spear that makes more appeal at the head of the market, as the 8/1 chance with bet365 racked up a brace of wins at Newcastle over the winter, and if he comes back in the same sort of form after half-a-year off the track he has the potential to deny another 4lb rise, and play a part here.
But, the one that makes most appeal is the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Steady Pace, who was last seen finishing a cracking second in the Wokingham Stakes at the Royal meeting last month, and off the same mark of 104 on Saturday can relish the slight step back up in trip to seven furlongs, and at 9/1 with Betfred is a cracking bet for victory.
Worth A Mention
Richard Hannon’s Tabarrak will have the burden of top weight, and having won a Listed event two starts ago was unable to follow up when fifth in the Royal Hunt Cup, so while he may be an each-way player here at 12/1 with bet365 he may just come up short in terms of the race victory.
Gary Moore’s Gossiping has blossomed of late, winning four of his last five starts, but the 12/1 shot with bet365 is going to find it tough to deal with a major 8lb rise for a win at Goodwood last time out, and in a much better race will struggle from the lower end of the weights.
Best Of The Rest
In such a wide open betting heat there’s sure to be many in with a chance, and the likes of Mutawathea, who relishes the hustle and bustle of a handicap, has to be given a mention at 12/1 with Sky Bet, with Bossy Guest (14/1) and Donncha (14/1) both adding terrific depth to a race that can see Josephine Gordon land another big-race success with the talented Speady Pace for the Godolphin team.
